The tall, powerful centre-half had made 21 first team appearances at West Ham and been on loan to Bristol Rovers and Plymouth before he signed for the Sky Blues for £1 million in the summer of 2006. Elliott made an instant impact with an outstanding debut against Sunderland. His central defensive partnership with Robert Page was a key to Coventry’s good defensive record up until Christmas. He was linked to a move to Premiership Charlton in January 2007 but a hamstring injury in training kept him out of action for a month during which the defence fell apart and manager Micky Adams was sacked. After Iain Dowie’s arrival he was given the captain’s armband and generally gave Coventry’s defence a more solid look. ‘Wardy’ always liked the big games and excelled in the famous wins at Old Trafford, Blackburn and West Brom. He also took over the penalty-taking role and scored six out of six during the 2007-08 campaign. The big hearted stopper who could win the ball in the air against many of the top strikers in the championship but gave the fans palpitations with his sometimes casual style. Elliott is the younger brother of Wolves defender Darren Ward.
