When the club’s pre-war left back Walter Metcalf retired in 1946 City had to find a replacement and signed 28-year old Dick Mason, no relation to George! Dick proved to be one of the most consistent players in the team in a turbulent period and was a virtual ever-present for seven full seasons. Despite a lack of height he was an excellent header of the ball and a strong tackler who always let the winger he was marking know he was there. One of his fortes was the hoofed clearance from inside his own penalty area and he often cleared the ball 50-60 yards. Goals from Dick were collector’s items. He scored both at Highfield Road, one against West Ham and the other a low shot from the penalty area against Colchester in 1953. In 1955 the 37-year old Mason was surplus to requirements at Highfield Road and left to become part-time player-manager at Bedworth Town before finally hanging up his boots at the age of 40.
