David was one Ron Atkinson’s first signings for City in 1995, joining from Everton for £1m. The tough tackling full-back had played for West Brom, Liverpool and West Ham and won seven England under 21 caps and three England B appearances. At Liverpool he played almost 200 games and won a League Championship medal in 1990 and an FA Cup winners medal two years later. His spells at West Ham and Everton were brief but he rejuvenated his career at Coventry. Numerous niggly injuries restricted his appearances for the Sky Blues and in his last season he was red carded twice (at Leicester and Tranmere) and was suspended for seven games. He rejected a new contract in 2000 and later played for Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday but continued to be jinxed by injury. He retired in 2003 and now lives in the Dordogne region of France where he plays some local amateur football.
