FA Cup winner 1987
Signed from Cardiff City by Bobby Gould for £100,000 ‘Benno’ showed glimpses of his potential under Gould and then Don Mackay but truly fulfilled his potential after Curtis and Sillett took over in 1986. During the 1987 FA Cup run he was enormously influential and scored in the semi-final at Hillsborough and the first goal at Wembley as well as setting up Houchen’s goal. He could play as a striker or as a wide right-winger and appeared in the 1981 FA Cup final for his first club Manchester City. He broke a leg in 1988 and soon after recovering he joined Sheffield Wednesday but the Sky Blues certainly saw the best of a highly talented player. On his return to Highfield Road with the Owls he was given a massive ovation when he came off the bench. Bennett worked for a time as a pundit and co-commentator for Free Radio 80s Coventry and Warwickshire, covering Sky Blues matches. He is now often heard in a similar role on BBC Coventry & Warwickshire.
