FA Cup winner 1987
Cyrille started his league career with West Brom who paid Hayes £5000 for him in 1977. In his seven years at the Hawthorns he built a formidable reputation as a goalscorer winning four England caps and narrowly missed going to the 1982 World Cup finals. His career was in a lull when Bobby Gould paid £300,000 for him in October 1984 but the signing was still seen as a major coup. His first two seasons at Coventry were disappointing as first Gould, and then Don Mackay used him as target man. Under John Sillett a more thoughtful approach was adopted, Regis got the ball more on the ground and the successful partnership with Dave Bennett was formed. He played a lion’s part in City’s 1987 FA Cup campaign, so much so that he returned to the England side to gain the last of his five caps. Critics said he did not score enough goals but he made many for others purely with his physical presence. In a decade that did not produce a fans hero comparable with Hutchison in the 1970’s or Hudson in the 1960’s, Cyrille comes closest to being the man of the 1980’s. He was given a free transfer by Terry Butcher in the summer of 1991, much to the displeasure of the fans, and it turned out to be a premature decision. In May 1992 Cyrille scored a goal against City at Villa Park that, but for Notts County’s late winner, would have sent his old club down. After two years at Villa he joined Wolves on a free transfer and later played for Wycombe Wanderers and Chester. He later took up a coaching role at West Brom and was awarded an MBE in 2008. He died from a heart attack in January 2018 at the tragically young age of 59.
