Colin was signed on loan from Celtic in 2002 by Roland Nilsson. A midfielder, he had been spotted by the Hoops on a trial in his home town and spent almost five years at Celtic without ever becoming a regular. In his loan period at City he impressed with his ball skills and passing ability and played in all of the final seventeen games of the season, scoring two good goals. In 2003 Sunderland signed him but tragedy struck three months later at Highfield Road when a hard (but fair) tackle by Youssef Safri broke his leg. A year later the same leg was broken in a training incident with his manager Mick McCarthy soon after he had resumed training. He never appeared for Sunderland again and has subsequently played for Livingston, Barnsley, Bradford City and Cork City. He won 13 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
