A member of an outstanding City youth team which included Mark Hateley and Danny Thomas, Clive scored prolifically for the youth (four goals in a 5-1 win over Northampton in 1978) and reserve teams but with great competition for places he got just one first team chance. He was replaced by Peter Bodak, who established himself as a first-team regular and the following summer joined Washington Diplomats where he briefly played alongside Johan Cruyff. He had two spells in Hong Kong, first in 1980 on loan with Seiko and later, after leaving City with Bulova. In 1982-83 he was top scorer in the Hong Kong league with 26 goals. After returning to the UK in 1984 he played regularly for Thanet United in Kent but work commitments forced him to hang his boots up before he was 30. He now lives in Ramsgate and works as a Quality Engineer.
