A product of City’s excellent academy in the late 1990s Chris came under the tutelage of Steve Ogrizovic early in his career. From an early age he looked a natural for the top and his father put a wager on him playing for England when he was 11-years old. He was still a youth team player when he made his debut for City and that season helped City to the Youth Cup final in Richard Money’s exciting team. During the 2000-01 season Chris became a serious threat to Magnus Hedman and played a number of games as well as winning England Under 21 honours. At Chelsea he was unfortunate to be sent off early in the game for fouling Hasselbaink. After playing in City’s first game after relegation Chris was sold to Liverpool for a British Record Fee for a goalkeeper, approximately £6 million. Various injuries have hampered his career since and he played less than 50 games in five years at Anfield. Loan spells at West Brom and Wigan preceded a permanent move to tha Latics. In 2006 he finally won his full England cap, against Greece, netting his father an estimated £100,000 pay day and Coventry an add-on to the original fee.
