Coventry City Player of the Year 2012–13
A skilful winger or attacking midfielder, Baker began his career at Prescot Cables before joining Southport in 2003, where he contributed to their Conference North title victory. His performance earned him a move to Morecambe in 2007, marking his entry into the Football League. Baker's career progressed with a stint at Stockport County, leading to a move Coventry City 2010. At Coventry, he served as captain during his final two years. In 2014, he joined Milton Keynes Dons, followed by a move to Portsmouth in 2016. A brief association with Indian Super League club ATK in 2017 was cut short due to injury. Baker returned to Coventry City in 2018 on a short-term deal before transitioning to non-league football with clubs including Nuneaton Borough, Brackley Town, and AFC Telford United. In November 2021, he was appointed assistant manager at AFC Telford United alongside manager Paul Carden.
In September 2009 it was confirmed that Baker's older brother (Michael) had tragically died of leukaemia; despite that Carl went on to play just two days later and score 2 goals in Stockport's 2–2 draw with Yeovil Town. After retiring from professional football, Baker ran his own football academies and more recently became a golf caddie for professional golfer Robert Rock.
