Calum was a member of the FA Youth Cup final teams of 1999 and 2000 and made his first team debut in City’s final Premier League game in 2001. He did not establish himself in the side until Gary McAllister arrived at the club and quickly developed an excellent partnership with Mo Konjic. In the summer of 2004 with the club’s finances in serious trouble, his departure was a foregone conclusion and City held out before selling him to Tottenham for £1.1 million. The assured young defender had become one of the top defenders outside the Premier League and was voted Player of the Year in his final season at City as well as winning England Under 21 honours. Opportunities were scarce at White Hart Lane and over the next two and half years he made less than 20 appearances for Spurs interspersed with loans at West Ham, Southampton and Norwich. It was with the latter that he scored at the Ricoh Arena in 2005. He joined West Ham permanently in January 2007 but had limited chances to shine.
