Lewis was brought in from Portsmouth by Jimmy Hill in early 1967 to ensure that Division 1 football came to Highfield Road. A hard tackling midfielder who was never on the losing side in Division 2 and played 22 games the following season in the top flight. Brian had a habit of upsetting big names and in the Boxing Day 1967 clash with Liverpool he irritated Ian St John so much that ‘the Saint’ felled him with a right hook and was sent off. He signed for Luton Town in early 1968 and was later a member of the Colchester United side that knocked the mighty Leeds out of the FA Cup in 1971. He returned to Pompey in 1972 and retired from playing in 1975. He died from cancer in 1998, aged 55.
