Centre-forward Brian Joicey was a prolific goalscorer in North Eastern Amateur circles in the late 1960s. In 1968-69 he helped North Shields to win the Northern League title and the FA Amateur Cup, beating Sutton United 2-1 in the Wembley final when he scored one of the goals. Despite competition from Newcastle United Noel Cantwell signed Joicey for £35,000. His City career started in the reserves but his goalscoring meant he was soon pushing for a first team place and three days after making his debut as a substitute at Derby he made a goalscoring full debut against West Ham at Highfield Road. The form of Neil Martin and John O’Rourke restricted Joicey’s opportunities in a season which saw City finish sixth but he scored some vital goals including the only goal in the Molineux victory which clinched the Europe place. The following season Charlie Buchan, as he was nicknamed by City’s players, struggled to score and although he became first choice after Neil Martin’s departure he soon lost his place to Billy Rafferty. Early in the 1971-72 season he was sold to Sheffield Wednesday for £45,000 to fund the purchase of Chris Chilton. He was a big-hit at Hillsborough and topped their scoring lists three years running before moving on to Barnsley in 1976. Brian topped the Division Four scorers in 1977 but his career was cut short after a health scare and he moved into non-league football with Frickley. He worked in the Sheffield car business for many years.
