Billy Frith spotted an eighteen-year old Wesson playing for Thornaby Boys Brigade and brought him to Coventry in later 1958. After a short spell on loan at Headington (Oxford) United Bob was understudy to South African goalkeeper Arthur Lightening for three seasons and got his chance in the first team towards the end of the 1960-61 season when Arthur was injured. When Lightening was surprisingly sold at the start of the 1962-63 season Jimmy Hill bought Dave Meeson over Bob but after Meeson’s shortcomings were exposed Wesson became first choice and kept goal throughout City’s thrilling FA Cup run that year. The following season he was a virtual ever-present in the Third Division championship side. In 1964 he lost his place following the signing of Bill Glazier but was back in goal after Glazier suffered a broken leg at Easter 1965. With Glazier out for a year Bob was first choice again but in September 1966 with Glazier fit, Bob was sold to Walsall for £15,000. Over the next six years he played over 200 games for the Saddlers before retiring in 1973. Bob, an unassuming chap, was constantly overlooked in favour of more stylish goalkeepers. He ran the Royal Oak at Kenilworth for many years and was a regular visitor to the CBS Arena before his death in 2022.
