Allen was born in Belfast but grew up in North Wales and in his teens he was on the books of Blackburn and Wolves. He was doing his National Service with George Curtis at RAF Bridgnorth when George persuaded him to have a trial at City. Manager Billy Frith was impressed enough to sign the left footed midfield player but gave him few opportunities. When Jimmy Hill arrived in November 1961 he gave Allen an extended run in the first team mainly as a half-back. In the summer of 1962 Allen applied to become a school-teacher in South Wales and turned down Hill’s offer of a new contract. He combined teaching with playing for Abergavenny. He later played for other Welsh clubs Bridgend & Sully and played up to the age of 48 and retired from teaching in 1993.
