Billy Frith signed Myerscough from Rotherham in the summer of 1960 and he was the regular centre-forward for the eighteen months up to the arrival of Jimmy Hill as manager. A late-starter in the game, Billy didn’t make his league debut until the age of 24 after Walsall spotted him in local Lancashire football. Aston Villa saw his potential and signed him in 1955 and he appeared in their successful FA Cup winning team in 1957 and scored 17 goals in 73 appearances. After four years at Villa Park he was released by Joe Mercer and had one season at Rotherham before coming to Highfield Road. After finishing 5th the previous season City were expected to be strong promotion challengers in 1960-61 and the strike partnership of Ray Straw and Myerscough would be the catalyst. Although Billy scored on his home debut, a 2-2 draw with Bradford City, he scored only 13 goals and City finished 15th. Myerscough did score one of the goals in City’s very first League Cup tie, a 4-2 win over Barrow. The following season he managed only thee goals and soon after Hill’s arrival he was transferred to Chester. He later played for Wrexham and Macclesfield and died at a relatively young age.
