Jimmy Hill shocked the football world in October 1964 when he paid a world record fee of £35,000 for a goalkeeper and signed Bill Glazier from Crystal Palace. It proved to be money well spent as Bill went on to give ten years service and, but for a broken leg in April 1965, he would have had a good chance of being selected for England’s 1966 World Cup squad.
Glazier had already impressed City fans after his consistent displays for Palace in the promotion battles of 1963-64 and within a month of joining City he won the first of three England under 23 caps when he appeared in the 5-0 win over Romania at Highfield Road. In April 1965 he broke his leg in a collision with Manchester City’s Glyn Pardoe at Maine Road. He was out for almost a year but when he returned he was soon back to his best. Bill was a key member of the 1967 promotion team but saved his best displays for the early seasons of struggle in the top flight, saving City from heavy defeats on a regular basis. In 1970 he made a further representative appearance as a substitute for the Football League v the Scottish League at Highfield Road. He was unfortunate to have been around at a time when there were so many top English goalkeepers.
He was City’s first choice keeper until the end of 1973-74 season when he lost his place to Neil Ramsbottom but the following season he was granted a testimonial match and the England World Cup winning squad honoured him. In 1975 he joined Brentford but injuries forced him to give up the game soon after. After retirement he ran a mobile catering business near Grantham.
