One of an excellent crop of youngsters who came through City’s nursery team Modern Machines. Given his debut by Harry Storer as an 18-year old, he had to wait two years to get another chance and showed good promise. Like many other promising youngsters he was sold, to Birmingham City and subsequently Hull City. At Boothferry Park he blossomed as a goalscorer and scored 89 goals in 190 games and in 1958-59 set a post-war Hull record by netting 30. In 1960 he moved to Bury for £5,000 but his best days were over and he subsequently played for Workington and Southport before becoming player-coach for Wigan Athletic.
