A product of City’s youth academy, the Irish youngster came to the fore in 1998 when he captained Ireland’s team that won the World under 18 championships. Months later he was given a nightmare debut by Gordon Strachan, away to Manchester United. The defensive midfielder with good passing ability did not let the side down but then again did not pull up many trees. For two seasons he was the midfielder who played if Boateng or McAllister or Eustace was injured and his appearances were restricted but he did enough to win four full caps for Ireland to go with 17 under 21 caps. Then in 2001-02 manager Strachan decided to play Barry, who generally made up for a lack of pace with a huge dollop of commitment, as a full-back. Marc Edworthy was out of favour and Barry became first choice right back after a spell on the other flank. After relegation he struggled to gain a place and was released in 2004 after a spell on loan at Oxford and then signed for them on a permanent basis.
