Bobby Gould signed the left winger/left midfield player for £200,000 from Manchester United in the summer of 1983. Ashley, an experienced Republic of Ireland international was expected to be the midfield playmaker but failed to deliver consistently for the Sky Blues and stayed only one season. He joined Luton Town in a deal that bought Kirk Stephens to Highfield Road and helped the Hatters to three Wembley finals in five years and was a member of their League Cup winning team in 1988. He won 19 caps for his country and had a spell at Osasuna in Spain before ending his playing career at Stoke City. A great friend of his former Man United colleague Lou Macari, Grimes worked as a coach under Macari at Stoke and Celtic, as well as coaching Huddersfield. Now works for the media in the North West.
