Gary McAllister signed Andy on a free transfer from Wrexham in the summer of 2003 after scoring 34 goals in the Welsh side’s Division Three promotion side the previous season. Though born in Yorkshire he grew up in Market Bosworth, Leicestershire and was a talented cricketer as well as a good footballer. Andy studied sports science at Newcastle University and played amateur football for Newcastle Blue Star. His break came after speaking to Sky Sports presenter Rob McCaffrey who arranged for him to have a trial at Wrexham. At City he quickly adapted to life in the higher division and had a run of goals in five successive games in his first season. Never a prolific scorer at City he won lots of admirers for his work rate and effort. Successive managers played him as a right-sided midfield player, a role that did not do his goal snaffling talents justice. In August 2006 he joined Blackpool and scored 25 goals for the Seasiders over the last two seasons including a memorable goal at the Ricoh last season that won him a tumultuous reception from City fans. He helped them to a play-off success in 2007 and scored four goals in a 6-3 away win at Swansea that season.
