Alan was a right-winger signed by the club in December 1954 for £10,500 from Nottingham Forest. The 27-year old North East born winger had failed to make the grade at Sunderland as a teenager after the war and drifted into non-league football with Spennymoor United. A talented winger with plenty of skills on the ball he was spotted by Chesterfield in 1948 and started an 11-year Football League career. He moved to Hull in 1951 before Forest signed him the following year and he had the most fruitful period of his career scoring 38 goals in 102 games. City were in turmoil when he signed for them with no manager – Jack Fairbrother had resigned a month earlier over board interference and the sale of Eddie Brown to Birmingham. When Gordon Nutt was sold to Cardiff for £15,000 the fans were up in arms and Moore was signed as his replacement, making his debut in a 1-1 draw with Southampton on Christmas Day 1954. Alan scored City’s goal, a header after 21 minutes but was also carried off with a sprained ankle and was out for several weeks. Alan always gave 100% for the cause and was a regular during the brief Carver era the following season.
After the arrival as manager of Harry Warren in 1956 Alan’s appearances were sporadic and in early 1957 he was suspended for ‘gross insubordination’ at a time when there was a lot of friction between the players and the manager. It was no surprise at the end of the season when Alan was released and he joined Swindon.
His final league club was Rochdale and his short spell there took his total senior appearances to over 275. He moved down to non-league football and played for Wisbech and was a very successful manager of Cambridge United for four years leading them to promotion to the Southern League Premier Division as well as the club’s best ever FA Cup run in 1963. One of his former City colleagues Roy Kirk, followed him as manager at Abbey Stadium.
Alan settled in the Cambridge area and ran a sports shop in the city for many years. His health had not been good for a few years and he died in April 2008 soon after he and his wife had celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
