
Barton began his professional career at Preston North End. In August 2012, he signed a three-year contract with Coventry City. In March 2014, he was loaned to Fleetwood Town for the remainder of the 2013–14 season. After making 27 league appearances in the 2014–15 season, Barton was released by Coventry in May 2015. Subsequently, he joined Portsmouth, followed by stints at Partick Thistle, Dundee United, and other clubs. Internationally, Barton has represented Northern Ireland in a senior friendly and the Republic of Ireland at the under-21 level.
